History
of Prambanan Temple, Yogyakarta
Prambanan
Temple or known as loro Jonggrang Temple is the largest Hindu temple in
Indonesia built in the 9th century AD.
Based
on the Siwagrha inscription in Prambanan temple, the original name of this
temple area is Siwagrha (Sanskrit) which means the House of Shiva. In the main
room of this temple there is a statue of Shiwa the Mahadewa as high as 3 meters
which means that in this temple Lord Shiva takes precedence.
Prambanan
hindu temple was built by Rakai Pikatan in order to be a match Buddhist temple
of Borobudur and also Sewu temple which is located not far from Prambanan, and
proved to be the biggest and grandest Hindu temple ever built in its time.
Some
scientists explain that the construction of this temple is a symbol of the
return of the Sanjaya family's glory over the land of Java, it is related to
the theory of different twin dynasties of competing beliefs; namely the Sanjaya
Hindus and the Sailendra Buddhist dynasty.
In
930 AD, the royal capital in Yogyakarta moved to East Java By Mpu Sendok which
is suspected by a terrific eruption of Mount Merapi or also suspected the
struggle for power struggle.
It
is not certain that the cause of the move to East Java is estimated to be one
of two things. Because of this displacement Prambanan Temple began to be neglected
and unkempt and slowly this temple was destroyed by age and then collapsed.
At
the 16th century, there was a great earthquake in Yogyakarta which then
worsened the condition of Prambanan Temple. Although no longer a religious
center and worship of Hindus, Prambanan temple is still recognized and known by
local residents.
