Borobudur
Temple is the largest Buddhist temple in Indonesia. Borobudur is also Indonesia
largest Buddha temple. Borobudur Temple was built during the reign of
Syailendra dynasty ruling in Java around the year 800 AD. The building is then
abandoned and buried in the ground. The attraction of this Borobudur temple is
about 500 Buddhist stupas and there are more than 1400 reliefs depicting
Buddhist journey up to Nirvana.
A
brief History
Borobudur
Temple was again discovered from the ground thanks to the services of Thomas
Stamford Raffles, the Governor General of England who ruled Java from
1811-1816. Borobudur name given by Thomas Stamford Raffles, which comes from
the name of the nearest village in the region, the village of Bore / Boro. The
term Budur is probably derived from the Javanese term that has the meaning of
"ancient". So Borobudur means "Boro Purba". Meanwhile,
other archaeologists also have the assumption that the term "budur"
can be taken from the term "budhara" which has the meaning of
"mountain".
The
construction of Borobudur temple still leaves a mystery up to now. Scientists
have not been able to explain how in the year 800 AD, Syailendra dynasty can
build a magnificent temple, which uses advanced architectural techniques and
with a high degree of precision. Scientists also have not been able to explain
where the origin of stones used to build Borobudur temple. There is an opinion
that the rocks are taken from Mount Merapi, but a further question arises as to
how to bring the rocks, given that the location of Borobudur is on a hill. So,
that’s why Borobudur is Indonesia cultural temple that be proud of the people
of indonesia.
After
that, Borobudur temple continues to undergo renovation to keep the condition of
the building to be sustainable, including the massive renovation in 1975, which
is a cooperation between the Government of Indonesia and UNESCO, which
establishes the Borobudur Temple as a world heritage site. It was because Borobudur so close to the most active volcano in the world, namely Mount
Merapi. In 2010, the eruption of Mount Merapi spewed volcanic ash on the
statues and buildings of Borobudur temple. Volcanic ash contains sulfuric acid
which can damage the largest temple building in Indonesia.
Vesak
Ceremony and Release of Lanterns
Every
feast of Vesak, Borobudur as Indonesia largest Buddhist temple, all Buddhists
from Indonesia as well as from other countries, such as Thailand and Myanmar,
celebrate the Vesak religious ceremony at Borobudur Temple. As one of the
religious temples of Indonesia, Buddhists use this holy place as a place of
prayer.
Vesak
ceremony in Borobudur also attracted the public, both domestic and foreign
tourists. They want to see at once perpetuate the sacred moments of the sacred
ceremony. Usually at night in Borobudur, there are rituals of thousands of
lanterns performed not only by Buddhists, but also by the common people who are
often perpetuated by photographers. Aproximately less than 2000 lanterns are
released into space during the feast of Vesak. The philosophy of the release
of the lantern is because Heaven is on the top, so the prayer delivered through
the lanterns can reach Heaven. It is also Indonesia cultural feast the tourist
can enjoy. So enjoy Borobudur night lanterns.
